Answer to the question is to use another N dimensional array and keep incrementing count of the mth counter value for element m.
The catch is the size of the array element. If this is an integer with 4 bytes. Count for an element cannot go beyond the maximum value of an integer. So if the N dimensional array has a single digit repeated N times, N is the maximum count that the new counter element should be able to hold.
ur right. I've rephrased the question.
since we're dealing only with digits I just need a integer counter array of size ten. For each element in the original array, process it through the following while loop. Eg, when x = 125
x = 125;
while(x)
{
counter[x mod 10]++;
x = x/10;
}
max criteria := max digits in max integer value * N; so for 4 byte number max value of N that may be supported is 429496729.
I'm unfamiliar with scripts though.
Actually the original question itself is not that very intriguing. I'm trying to remember what the original discussion was about. I think it was more about optimization and not having to use a second data structure for counters. I don't know what exact answer I gave. I'll let you know if I remember.
Here' what I tried:-
array of two digit numbers
==========================
sum of digits at tens place
= (sum of numbers - sum of digits)/9
sum of digits at units place
= (10(sum of digits) - sum of numbers)/9
once you have the summation value. since we know n number are available, list out combinations that would satisfy.
The combination that satisfies the following is the right one.
product of tens place digits - product of units place digits = product of numbers(product of digits -1)/99 * product of digits.
It is possible to have the different combinations that add up to different numbers available in a database with the count of duplicated digits (at the most 0 - 9)(unless you want to count them at program time) as this is a constant value. Once the right combination is fixed. The number of times digits got duplicated is also known.Sum and product of numbers as well as sum and product of digits are updated as and when new elements are added to the array.So these should be readily available.
But not sure about the efficiency, eg. sum of unit's = 5
sum of ten's = 5
7 different combinations possible for 5 or more numbers. therefore 7! combination sets available to be matched.
||ly I guess equations are available for 3 and more digit numbers. Let me know if you want to go thru...
How 'bout it? if I go more than this, I'd rather do research on numbers and get a legal Phd done. What the right answer?
actually no of combinations for that 5, 5 example is just 49(mea culpa :P). so efficiency looks promising compared to going through 100 or more 2 digit numbers.
